PART 1    Identifying the problem, its

                 effects  and its solution.

The Ridge in print form faces certain problems that may hinder its aim of garnering a wide/wider readership. The limitations, how they affect the publication, and how the electronic medium may eradicate these limitations are given below.

1.      Paper and print costs.

The problem: NUSSU faces the conflicting task of making the publication as informative and appealing as possible for its readership as well as keeping such costs at a minimum.

The effects: Due to such budgetary concerns, the publication is dull in colour (only two main colours—black and white—are used), limited in content, and text-heavy (so as to provide as much information as possible) with insufficient graphics.

The solution: In the electronic medium, this problem would not exist, hence, the publication can be enhanced with more graphics and a broader content without concerns of exorbitant paper and print costs.

2.      The need for a handy and lightweight copy of the publication.

The problem: For the reader’s convenience, the publication cannot comprise too many pages so as to ensure that it is light and easy to carry around.

The effects: Undoubtedly then, the content of the publication is compromised such that certain information which might be of interest and relevance for the readership but of secondary importance to some other information is left out.

The solution: In the electronic medium, pages and pages can be easily created so that all information relevant and of interest to the readership can be provided without the abovementioned worries that plague the print form of the publication.
